My wife and I had an amazing time camping on the west shores of Maui last week. Many people stopped to ask us about our Tentsile tree tent and we were more than happy to give them a tour.
Forests and trees are essential for our world. Not only do they stabilise the climate, absorbing the excessive carbon emissions produced by the ever-modernising human world, but they also provide ecosystems for all types of life, whether it be the insects and funguses that live in the mosses that grow around their roots, the birds that nest in their branches, the animals that feed on their leaves, or even - in true Tentsile style - the Ewoks that live in their canopies. You name, you think of it, trees and forests are the pillars of our natural world, supporting life as we know it. If we take them away, we take away more than just the greenery that softens our plants; we take away life itself. Moreover, sustainable reforestation projects can help empower local residents through land mapping and local employment. The most important thing, then, if we can’t stop chopping them – for Christmas trees, for home furniture, for homes - is to re-plant what we take. We need to actively go out there and replenish the golden goose from which we, humans, so rapaciously take.
So, activism is an important part of the change needed. We need our trees to stand up and being planted. To paraphrase Martin Luther King Jr. "If we cannot do great things, we can do small things in a great way." Tentsile feels the same way. We can not match the great might of the big projects - like those mentioned in a previous blog - of India’s world-recording-smashing 50 million trees in one day or Mr Beast’s 24 million trees since 2020. But we can plant as many as we can. We are actively engaged in reforestation endeavours, and after today's announcement we're delighted to say we'll have planted 70,000 new trees with veritree since we started working with them in May 2023, and over a million trees since the seed of Tentsile first grew shoots. Teaming up with Veritree and their blockchain technology, each tree's environmental impact is meticulously accounted for. And our 70,000 trees this year will cover 6.9 hectares – equivalent to almost ten football pitches that will sequester 17,001 tonnes of CO2.
And those committed Tentsile-blog-followers among you will know that our recent focus has centred on the reforesting of mangroves in Kenya's Likoni river delta – a call for help by the Kenyan government to combat erosion, foster biodiversity, provide habitats and boost local employment. Through collaboration with Earth Lung, we contribute to ecosystem restoration and community resilience efforts.
As we commemorate the International Day of Forests, let us acknowledge the incremental significance of each tree planted. The coming year holds untold possibilities, but one certainty prevails: our concerted efforts can cultivate a flourishing environment for posterity. As we at Tentsile begin to look at where else we can plant more trees, let us extend a symbolic gesture of appreciation to the forests and their many wonders. Let trees and forests elevate our natural experience.

In the UK, connecting with nature can sometimes be a challenge to achieve, however life-long friends and adventurers, Tom Backhouse and Alex Clasper, have made it their mission to revolutionise the way we access, experience and share time in nature, by launching CampWild.
The duo are working with landowners, trusts and custodians across the country to responsibly ‘unlock’ Wild Spaces, which are designated areas of private land, for permitted wild backpack camping and adventure.
Since launching, more than 75 Wild Spaces are available and the awe-inspiring network is growing every week. The environments and landscapes are unique and truly varied, and include everything from an Atlantic rainforest, wildflower meadows and working farms, to country estates and dense woodlands, with many offering access to beautiful waterfalls, lakes or streams, to name just a few.
Each Wild Space is unique in character and offers the opportunity to responsibly experience the wonders of the natural environment, on an exclusive basis, while supporting landowners with the conservation of the space, so it is preserved for future generations.
In addition to the Wild Spaces, through its online platform, CampWild also provides a directory of over 250 vetted Wilder Campsites, planning tools, a community platform, member benefits, brand-partner discounts, and access to exclusive events, workshops, and webinars with CampWild ambassadors.
Now, planning an off-grid adventure is possible, whether you are a novice or seasoned explorer, giving you the chance to disconnect from the modern world, and instead reconnect with nature.

Our project with Earth Lungs focuses specifically on mangroves. Although for team Tentsile UK, mangroves are associated with hot and exotic climes in parts of the world we can only dream of (whilst sipping tea in the grey drizzle that is our little island!), for millions of people around the globe, the importance of mangroves cannot be over-stated. Whether you live in Florida or Kenya, Costa Rica or Madagascar, you will be aware that mangroves are the backbone of many eco-systems the world over.

Now, ten years on, Tentsile has planted over a million trees. Yes, for a tiny company coming out of the UK, we’ve made it. It took a lot of hard work, and it certainly took a lot longer than we would have hoped. But we made it!
And not just for numbers’ sake. Sure, it’s always nice to aim for, and reach, a target - but there is a more serious reason why we plant trees (and it is not just so we can hang out in them - although that, too, is also very nice!).
Trees have a specific role to play in the environment. For example, we know they take out carbon from the atmosphere. We know they produce oxygen. We also know they provide habitats for animals. Moreover, we know planting and maintaining forests provides employment, and that by working hand in hand with communities the projects are informed by years of local knowledge and expertise.
The roots of mangrove trees bury deep into the coastline or riverbank, encouraging soil deposition and protect against coastal erosion. This is the way they build up eco-systems. They create spaces of calm within the water for animals such as crabs, birds and small fish, all of which use the roots for shelter and protection, and all of which play a role in the local wildlife food chain. These mangrove roots also act like shields along coastlines or riverbanks, stopping waves from getting inland and causing further erosion, protecting land animals and human homes, as well as water creatures. All in all, mangrove trees have an important – and unique – function. And that’s why Tentsile works with Earth Lungs to support the planting and maintaining of mangrove forests (or mangals) in Kenya.
So, our tree planting efforts continue, as we look towards our next million. I know it isn’t quite India’s world-recording-smashing 50 million trees in one day or Mr Beast’s 24 million trees since 2020, but it is a next million nonetheless. And it’s our next million; a million more we can be proud of, a million more that will be closely monitored, tracked and nurtured so thay are able to flourish. Every little helps. Many a mickle makes a muckle. Or, indeed, many a mangrove makes a mangal.

20 Tree Planted
In case you didn’t already know, we plant 20 trees for every tree tent or hammock sold with our tree planting partners Veritree, Eden Reforestation Project and WeForest.
Last month we reached a huge milestone of 1,000,000 trees planted, in locations which include Madagascar, India, Zambia and North America. These projects not only help to restore habitats and eco-systems, but also help to regenerate communities and local economies.
You can learn more about Eden Project and what they do by watching our interview with Tentsile Founder, Alex Shirley-Smith and Eden Projects, Daniel Hartz, and also our interview with WeForest's very own Jessica Charmers, to see what great work they do!
Tentsile was born out of a love of trees and an aim to educate about the dangers of global deforestation, so that more people might play an active role in saving them. After all, ‘if we’re all hanging out in trees, they can't chop them down’!
1% for the Planet Member
We are a member of 1% for the Planet, a charity which invests in sustainability initiatives across the world. As a member, we donate 1% of our revenue to this charitable organisation which means, that every time you make a purchase from Tentsile, we invest at least 1% of the sale price into projects working hard to make the planet a more sustainable place.
Find out more about 1% for the Planet and the other initiatives Tentsile plays a role in.
EOCA Member
The EOCA (European Outdoor Conservation Association) is another charitable organisation we support. Their work supports conservation projects around the world, helping to protect wildlife, oceans and land.
Our membership fee helps to fund these projects. You also get to vote on which projects you think deserve to be funded. If you follow us on Instagram, we let you know about new projects and how you can vote, as well as how you can support them, twice a year. Click here to learn more about this.
You can out more about the EOCA’s past and current projects here.
Sea NOT Air
While not a charity or donation, we also minimise our logistical impact by only freighting by sea to our warehouses. Never using Air freight. While air freighting is much faster, it is much worse for the environment due to the pound for pound emissions.
Sea freight has a smaller carbon footprint than air freight and studies have shown that using air freight produces 31 times more emissions than sea freight. While both options have an environmental impact, we try to minimise our footprint wherever we can.
If you want to help offset some of your spending this Black Friday, then you can plant trees with us. All tree planting monies go directly to reforestation projects. We will not keep a penny!

When it comes to cooler weather camping, bigger is not better – you want less space to heat so that nothing is wasted. The aim is to be as thermally efficient as you can be so you’re not heating extra space.
If you’re camping solo try the UNA hammock tent for a snug flat-lay solution. Or, if there’s two of you, or you just want a little more space the Flite is a great lightweight and compact alternative
As with a ground tent, insulating the floor of your tree tent is a key step in ensuring you stay warm and comfortable. Adding foam padding, sleeping mats as well as thermal blankets to your set-up, all help to keep the warmth inside your tent. The aim is to keep a buffer between you and cold air.
The SkyPad sleeping mat has been designed specifically to fit within all our tree tents and has an R-value of 4.4 (R-value is a measure of thermal resistance; the higher the R-value, the more thermally resistant the material /structure is).
We also expanded on our Inner Quilt range this year, adding the 2 person version to fit Connect models - designed for year round comfort and insulation with an R-value of 2.7. Attach inside or as an under quilt beneath the tent (or both!) to create a bubble of air that keeps you cosy warm and negates the unpleasant experience of 'Cold Butt Syndrome' (yes, it's a thing...).
To help prevent cool air hitting the bottom of your tree tent, try setting up a windbreak around the sides of the tent to act as a buffer between you and the elements.
By using the Tentsile walls around each side of your tent it will help to create a barrier and lock-in more heat. The walls will also create an extra covered and protected space below you to store gear and set-up camp.
As any Tentsile camper already knows, all our tree tents come with a fully waterproof rainfly - 3000 HH for Lite range, 5000HH for Classic models. Together with the built-in insect mesh, the rain fly helps to further lock in heat, as well as providing a rain and wind proof protective layer over your tent.
If you’ve already been using your rainfly for a couple of seasons, it’s worth setting up and testing its waterproof quality before you embark on a camping trip. Your rainfly may need re-waterproofing which can be easily done with a product like NikWax.
Our rainflies are intended to last for several years when used correctly, but, if you find your rainfly is now in need of replacement, you can opt for a new one here.
As well as a rainfly, you can add even more insulating qualities to you tent by placing a foil thermal blanket on the top of the tree tent between the insect mesh and rainfly. The blanket will reflect your own body heat back down into the tent helping to retain the heat you generate.
Next up, and a camping essential is a warm sleeping bag. A mummy sleeping bag with drawstring hood will keep you cocooned and lock-in the heat. Try to go for a bag with a good temperature rating for sub-zero conditions. And if you go for a down filled bag, don’t forget to make sure it’s ethically sourced
And if all else fails, get yourself some heat packs to pop inside your sleeping bag to help keep you warm all night. Or, try a good old fashion hot water bottle as the next best thing! Yes, you’ll need to boil water, but there’s nothing like a hot water bottle to warm those frozen toes!
Make sure you’re prepared for off season camping, and get geared up. If you have any top tips for staying warm while winter camping leave us a comment below. We’d love to hear of other great ways to insulate your tent.
]]>The simplest way to get a cushion of static (able to be warmed) air beneath one’s body, is to use an air mattress / pad. These have been around for decades and provide both a fair amount of insulation from the cold hard ground, as well as much needed softening. Air Pads design has come a long way and they can be very effective. For our Air Pads, we partnered with leading brand in this field, Klymit, to create the Tentsile SkyPad. It does what it says on the tin; keeps the cold off your back and designed to fit our range of tents.
Again, Tentsile has learnt from world of hammocks and found a way to apply the solution to the flat surfaces that Tree Tents and Giant Hammocks offer to a multiple of occupants. Our Insulated Quilt Range (like many of our products), are versatile and able to be used in more than one way. With the silky-soft outer fabric, the fibrous padding within can used as a topper to the floor fabric like a sumptuous sheet, secured into place by Velcro pads.
When the temperature drops, the quilts become more effective when used on the under side of the floor so that they are not compressed which helps keep the wind off while also creating space for a warmer layer of air to build up between the quilt and the floor fabric.
Of course, you could opt for the king of all solutions; the bonkers but incredible, Insulated Cabin. A full room made up from our golden, silky, padded quilt, which attaches in various ways to the other Tentsile products in your armoury, making a space you could bed your children down in when the snow starts to fall. With its’ multiple windows, doors and air vents (each with insect mesh screens) the ventilation the Cabin can offer is almost as good as the hunker-down cosy cabin you want to hide away in.

Hundreds of people renting tents, bringing their own tents and borrowing tents, all gathering together in the trees to eat, drink and be merry. We have always made sure that there have been plenty of activities for all age groups, from night walks and star gazing, to expert lead lessons in tree climbing, SUP board yoga, to live music, swimming, games, and all kinds of other entertainment.
In order to ensure that all tastes and needs are catered for, have been lucky enough to have some of our favourite brands and chefs come and take care of all the food and drinks for us. Some of them have even pitched up with a complete lounging area for our guests to sit in comfy chairs around the fire.
We usually have to put on a gathering such as this on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, as we have an equal following in the EU and US, that would be sad to miss out if they couldn’t come. We’ve had a lot of fun and so have all of our lovely guests! And the bit that everyone likes best? Getting into their Tentsile Tree Tents at the end of a good long day, of course!
We wish all of life was a party in the forest, but when it is time for the party to end and for us all to pack up and go home, we know that there will only be another 11 months until we all meet again… somewhere in a forest, not too far away from home.
]]>Over half of Europe’s last primeval forests are found in Romania - but they are under serious threat. Nearly 8.8 MILLION metres³ of the forest is illegally logged every year. Even areas identified as National Parks are vulnerable. These sites of environmental significance are being lost at an alarming rate to greed and corruption.
We are absolutely thrilled to share the incredible news that Tentsile have now reached our target of planting 1 Million trees in 10 years, with our tree planting partners! Protecting and preserving the World’s forests has always been at the very heart of everything we do here at Tentsile. We don’t plant trees so that we can sell more Gear – in fact it’s the exact opposite – we sell tents so that we can plant as many trees as possible. Simple.
]]>
When we started out in 2013 – hand stitching our first prototype in the kitchen – the inspiration for our brand was centred around the environment. Our Founder Alex was seeking a way to encourage more people to spend time outdoors, and in particular, in woodlands and forests. He knew that in doing so, people would have more time and space to reflect on the beauty of their local woodlands from the comfort of a Tree Tent, and hopefully would be inspired all the more to protect them from over development and the wider perils of deforestation.
Since we launched, we have been planting 20 trees for each tent and hammock sold, and have now hit our target of planting 1 million trees with partners including veritree, Eden Reforestation Project and WeForest. These trees have been planted all over the world – from Zambia and Madagascar, to the USA, India and Nepal. You can dig deeper into our planting efforts here – where you can see the exact location our verified trees are being planted at the moment. Each sapling is monitored, measured and protected into maturity, so we (and you!) know for certain that they will go on to sequester carbon, rejuvenate ecosystems, and benefit local communities for many generations to come.
Of course, we’re not going to stop there. Why would we? Vast areas of forest are still being depleted every day to feed frenzied global consumerism; destroying habitats and accelerating global warming, all in the name of profit. As long as Tentsile is making world class Outdoors Gear, we will proudly be on the frontline of reversing this destruction.
Here is what some of our environmental partners have to say about our achievements:
"Congratulations to Tentsile on the remarkable milestone of planting their one millionth tree. Their unwavering commitment to nature restoration sets a powerful example for businesses everywhere. Tentsile has demonstrated that by integrating nature restoration into their operations, they can make a profound impact on our environment. We applaud Tentsile for their outstanding efforts in taking a stand for a more sustainable future, and we're thrilled to stand alongside them in this vital journey of restoring and preserving nature." - David Luba, Co-Founder and Head of Partnerships at veritree
"1% for the Planet members commit to donating at least 1% of annual sales directly to environmental organizations. We certify every donation to ensure businesses meet that commitment. Tentsile has been a certified and valued member of 1% for the Planet since they joined the movement in 2017. The impact that they have had through their partnerships with WeForest and Eden Reforestation Projects over the years speaks to the strength of their commitment. We're incredibly grateful for their dedication to support people and the planet so future generations thrive." - Kiera Murphy, Account Manager, UK & Europe, 1% for the Planet
"Tentsile has been a member of the European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA), supporting vital conservation projects around the world since 2018, and we are delighted to hear about their one million trees milestone. This kind of work is absolutely crucial as we face the climate and loss of biodiversity crises. Here’s to the next million!" Tanya Bascombe, General Manager

The Restorative Coalition is community of businesses committed to integrating nature restoration into their operations. Through this collaboration, we aim to use collective knowledge, resources, and expertise to drive positive change and contribute to a more sustainable future.
]]>Protecting the environment has always been a core focus for us here at Tentsile. The inspiration for our products actually goes back all the way to our Founder’s childhood, when he watched a documentary about the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. At that moment he knew immediately that one way or another, he would forge a career which would allow him to take a stand against deforestation, and from this seed grew the idea of his ground breaking invention – the Tree Tent. After all – if we’re all hanging out in the trees, they can’t be chopped down…
Since we started out 10 years ago, we pledged to plant 20 trees for each Tree Tent and Hammock sold. With close to a million trees now planted, we’ve had a tangible impact on the habitats and local communities in which we’ve funded planting projects. We’ve always maintained that bold ambitions can best be achieved through collaborative action with likeminded businesses and individuals, and believe passionately that if we all come together, we CAN tackle the climate crisis that is unfolding around us.
We know also that offsetting carbon through tree planting is simply not enough, and we recognize the urgency and importance of taking further decisive action to restore nature. As a business we have a responsibility to ensure that every service provider we work with shares our ethics, and works towards minimising impact at every stage of our operations. From working with shipping providers who use Biofuel instead of fossil fuels, to partnering with EOCA and 1% For The Planet to reinvest profits back into sustainable initiatives, we have established a robust network of organisations with whom we are proud to work.
As a team, we also commit to practicing what we preach – we voluntarily closed all of our offices in favour of working remotely to minimise commuting, and car share or take public transport on occasions when we do need to meet in person. We no longer print manuals, and all of our packaging is made from recycled card, using non-toxic inks. We have no single use plastics in Tentsile products, and have a Trade-in and Upcycling program in place to divert old gear from landfill. These are just a few examples of how we embed nature into our business.
Back in April 2023, we began working with veritree so that we could better verify, monitor and protect the trees we have planted in partnership with them. So, when veritree invited us to become a founding member of their newly launched Restorative Coalition, we couldn’t wait to get started!
The Restorative Coalition is community of businesses committed to integrating nature restoration into their operations. Through this collaboration, we aim to use collective knowledge, resources, and expertise to drive positive change and contribute to a more sustainable future.
As a member of the coalition, Tentsile will continue to actively embed nature restoration into our business model. We have set ambitious goals to make a measurable impact, aligning with the coalition's vision and objectives. By joining forces with like-minded businesses, we are creating a network of sustainability leaders and fostering collaboration to maximize our collective impact.
Nature-based solutions offer a holistic and sustainable approach to restoring and protecting our environment. These solutions harness the inherent power of nature to address various environmental challenges. From reforestation and habitat restoration to sustainable agriculture and coastal protection, nature-based solutions offer numerous benefits. They provide cost-effective and long-term solutions to combat climate change, enhance biodiversity, improve water quality, and strengthen natural resilience. Investing in these solutions not only safeguards our ecosystems but also creates economic opportunities and supports local communities.
The time to act is now. Every business has a crucial role to play in addressing the environmental crisis we face. By integrating nature restoration into our operations, we are demonstrating our unwavering commitment to a sustainable future for all. At Tentsile we are wholeheartedly dedicated to taking a stand and driving positive change. Our partnership with veritree's Restorative Coalition empowers us to go beyond individual efforts and collaborate with other businesses to achieve collective goals.
By leveraging the strength of this coalition, we can amplify our impact, accelerate restoration efforts, and inspire others to join the movement. Restoring nature is not just an aspiration; it is a necessity. The challenges we face in nature demand immediate action, increased investments, and collaboration across sectors. By acknowledging the funding gap, embracing nature-based solutions, and partnering with initiatives like this Restorative Coalition, we can pave the way for a healthier, more sustainable World. Let us rise to the occasion, make a lasting impact, and ensure that the beauty and abundance of nature thrive for generations to come.

Coupled with our high-grade material selection, the products are not only strong and stable, but extremely durable and comfortable, not to mention practical and simple to set up and take down. Built to suspend multiple people in cloud-like comfort together in the trees, safety is of paramount importance, and we do not skimp when it comes to the top-notch production value we bring to the market. Each and every component included in the bag has been rigorously tested, from the anti-roll straps to the ratchets and hardware. Futher still – we continually refine our products based on customer feedback, so that our offering is consistently improving over time.
So well designed are our products in fact, that they have received critical acclaim from some of the most reputable reviewers in the world – with gear editors, testers and reviewers from the likes of Outside Magazine, Backpacker, Men’s Journal, Gear Junkie and countless others putting our Tree Tents through their paces. Each time we’ve had stellar reviews, and thousands more from our customers to back them up – testifying to the incredible build quality, durability, and strength of our range.
Our success however, has drawn attention of the sharks out there who have started to flood the market with a kaleidoscope of copy-cat and counterfeit products. These are pretty easy to spot, as they often offer prices that seem too good to be true… and they are. We have been inundated with emails from upset customers who have bought from these unreputable sources, after they received product that was either miniature ( 3ft Giant Hammocks?!) or unfit for purpose. Some of these products are being sold for as low as $15 USD, and this should be an immediate warning sign.
In some cases, these companies use Tentsile’s own photography and imagery to sell their poor quality, unsafe hammocks, so it can be a challenge to spot the knock-offs, but the price point is a glaring warning sign. A product built well enough to hold 3-6 people suspended in the air, cannot be made and sold at some of the prices you may have seen online. If it feels too good to be true, it usually is. The risk of falling from height and sustaining injury simply isn’t worth the cheap price tag – don’t undervalue your safety! As well as that, think about how that counterfeit product has been made – cheap materials, poor labour conditions and pay for factory workers, and substandard product that will end up in landfill after it inevitably fails the first time you take it out on the trail. We tested this theory by the way… watch what happened when we bought a fake Trillium hammock and took it out in the Peak District to do a side by side comparison with a genuine Tentsile hammock – this video says it all! For more information on identifying counterfeit vs genuine Tentsile Gear, you can also read this blog where we first covered the rising trade in knock-off Tree Tents and Hmmocks.
So, when considering your Tentsile purchase, if you are seeing deals that seem too good to be true and are unsure of the source, feel free to get in touch and ask us – we really don’t mind! Though we’re a tiny team, we’d rather see to it that each and every one of you is safe in the Trees. Send us a link to the product you are considering and we will let you know if it is genuine, safe, tested and comes from a reliable source. Between May and July, clouds of smoke engulfed Toronto and Ottowa, as well as parts of the USA, with the 2023 Canadian wildfire season being the largest and most devastating on record (1). 14 million hectares have been burnt to the ground.
“Scientists have now analyzed the conditions that caused the fires that raged in the Canadian province of Quebec between May and July and found that the climate crisis, driven by the burning of fossil fuels, made them at least twice as likely, and the fire-prone weather at least 20% more intense.” The Guardian
The loss of such a vast amount of biodiversity is hard to contemplate - from the trees and plants in the forest, to the animals and insects that lived there. Then there’s the human cost. Families shattered, communities faced with very real tragedy – grief and loss. For our generation, who grew up educated about the dangers of climate change, fossil fuels and global warming – these events feel like something of a grim inevitability, bolstered as they are by mass consumerism and an ever increasing global population. But we CAN do something, and we must.
We often get asked why Tree Planting is such an integral part of our business at Tentsile. There are hundreds of corporates planting trees now after all, as part of carbon offsetting initiatives which go some way to counterbalancing a company’s carbon footprint and environmental impact. So why is it so central to our values?
The reason we think reforestation and protection of old growth Forest is crucial, is simple. We know that by planting trees we sequester carbon, and at the same time can help dampen soaring global temperatures by protecting the ancient foliage of rainforests and jungles. We also know that the most sustainable way of making meaningful, long term impact, is by supporting alternative livelihoods. We have to work together with communities to stop the deforestation of their environment – whether that’s happened because of natural disasters, rapid urbanisation, or slash and burn practices. That’s why we fund tree planting with our planting partners veritree and EarthLungs in Kenya, by donating 20 trees for each tent of hammock sold in our store. They work in complete collaboration with local citizens to offer training opportunities, and fair wage roles in project deployment such as planting and nursery management. All of the work is informed by the expertise of residents, and goes on to directly contribute to the development of their community. Having a viable and sustainable source of income means that people don’t have to rely on money from selling firewood and charcoal, which in turn preserves the forest. In the coastal planting sites, thriving Mangrove Forests has been restored after years of degradation – fish are becoming more abundant and so food security for an entire community begins to recover. At the Kisumu project in coastal Kenya, a wonderful example of this is how earnings from tree planting helped fund the building of a bridge, giving residents safe passage over the fast flowing river – you can read more about that here.
So far since May 2023 we have funded the planting of 18,750 trees with the Earth Lungs, contributing to our overall planting total of 985,735 trees worldwide since 2013.
One of the great aspects of working with Veritree is that we have greater insight than ever before into the efficacy and impact of the planting work we fund. Each tree planted is recorded methodically using blockchain technology, so it can be accurately counted, verified and continually measured to ensure it thrives. You can find out more about the specific location each or out 18,750 are being planted, here: https://www.veritree.com/impact-hub/tentsile

Becoming less dependent on plastic is definitely a journey we’re all on, especially here at Tentsile too. And we’re certainly not there yet, there’s still so much more to do. Last year we stopped using any single-use plastic in our factory and instructed all our suppliers not to use plastic packaging in the transportation of our materials. Find out more about the steps we've taken, and why we are so committed to eradicating single use plastics once and for all.
]]>A world driven by convenience has led to a throw-away culture fuelling a plastic environmental crisis. As the UN puts it ‘our planet is choking on plastic’ and it’s our addiction to single-use plastic specifically which has caused it. We have become over dependant on this man-made material and we must reduce our reliance in order to help solve the problem. Single-use plastics have become so deeply engrained in our consumer habits that for decades we barely recognised the issue, nor realised just how much we collectively consumed of this convenient, but environmentally destructive material.
Sobering facts. Why on earth would we need to be generating so much of something that becomes obsolete so quickly, yet takes centuries to decompose (est. 450yrs for a single plastic bottle)? And even when our plastic waste does 'disappear' from our shorelines and ocean surfaces, ground down by the elements, we're left with the trillions upon trillions of micro-plastics polluting our environment:
"Every year, tens of millions of tons of plastic enter Earth’s oceans. Scientists initially assumed that the material was destined to float in garbage patches and gyres, but surface surveys have accounted for only about one percent of the ocean’s estimated plastic. A recent model found that 99.8 percent of plastic that entered the ocean since 1950 had sunk below the first few hundred feet of the ocean. Scientists have found 10,000 times more microplastics on the seafloor than in contaminated surface waters." The New York Times
Discover more over at the UN Environment Programme.
Plastics and single-use plastic has permeated our everyday lives and while our governments can and should be doing more to help combat this global pandemic, we as individuals need to change too. It’s not enough to just recycle our plastic, we need to cut back on it altogether. And that’s what Plastic Free July is all about, changing our habits and reliance on plastic. The time is now. So here’s some small changes you can make within your everyday life.
Make it a habit – here’s 10 ways you can change today:
Becoming less dependent on plastic is definitely a journey we’re all on, especially here at Tentsile too. And we’re certainly not there yet, there’s still so much more to do. Last year we stopped using any single-use plastic in our factory and instructed all our suppliers not to use plastic packaging in the transportation of our materials.
We’ve also created our growing Ocean range of Tree Tents and Hammocks which are made from plastic reclaimed from the ocean. The Ocean UNA hammock tent is made from the equivalent of 128 plastic bottles and the Ocean Solo Hammock from the equivalent of 37 plastic bottles.
But perhaps most importantly of all - we are dedicated to creating products that LAST. The culture of disposable consumerism has to end, and to knock that on the head it takes brands to stand up and be counted. Create robust, hardwearing, exceptional quality product that isn't designed to fail after a few uses so you have the buy another one and we can make a quick buck. Quite the opposit in fact - nothing gives us more joy than a customer from 2015 getting in touch to say their Stingray Tree Tent is still going strong!
On top of all of that, we also have an Upcycling program in partnership with a Utah based University that helps give products that have reached the end of their usable life a new purpose and divert them from landfill.
So, that concludes our round up which we hope serves to show that with a little bit of effort, each of us - business and individuals alike - can change habits of a lifetime and help protect our planet from the harmful effects of plastic pollution.
Join the fight against plastic #BeatPlasticPollution for #CleanSeas and find out what you can do to help this Plastic Free July.
]]>Kids can find the joy in everything - especially if there’s a Tree Tent involved. Having a portable treehouse in a bag is a fantastic way to make camping adventures even more fun, and coax those little ones away from the screens and back into the Great Outdoors!
]]>Obviously there are too many benefits to count when it comes to kids spending time in the Outdoors – the physical aspect – fitness, vitality, strength and general good health being only the start. Camping is a brilliant way for children to hone essential skills - learn about nature, the art of pitching a comfortable shelter that protects from the elements, building a fire, and discovering ingenious ways to solve new challenges like cooking outdoors and leaving no trace. Create, invent, problem solve.
When you’re taking the kiddos with you, planning ahead is more important than ever before. The days of casually rocking up to a campsite and hoping for the best, are over. But, with this new level of organisation and prep, comes opportunity! Here are some helpful resources to help you find a spot to take your Tentsile:
As any parent knows – you absolutely do not want to find yourself caught short when it comes to setting up your families shelter for the night having not familiarised yourself with the technique! That’s why we created a super informative set up and pack down guide for each of our Tree Tent and Hammock models, so that you can take out the guesswork ahead of your trip. That said, setting up a Tentsile is much easier than it might first look, so long as you follow the instructions. Why not watch them with your kids before the adventure begins, and they can be your hands-on helpers when it’s time to set-up your portable tree house!
Top tip: Download our Youtube Set-up guides to your phone / device before you leave so you can access from the wilderness if you lose signal.
So, you’ve set up basecamp. Now what? Well, whatever your itinerary - if you’re venturing away from camp for the day and likely to happen upon some lovely trees, take a T-Mini double hammock along with you! Tiny, light, and super easy to fit into your day bag – this little beauty is barely noticeable on your back and makes mid-trail snack stops all the more enjoyable. Set up in less than 10 mins and you’ve got yourself a perfect relaxation spot for the kids (and you) to have a well earned rest and take a load off, if just for 30 mins! Maybe even a nap stop… (nature naps are under-rated!) - just don’t ever fall asleep in direct sunlight and remember the importance of shade / sunscreen. Which leads us nicely to…
You don’t always need a ton of gear with you when you go on a camping adventure; sometimes a simple pencil and sketchbook, or wildlife journal, will help your kids find fun ways to tap into both their creative and nature mapping skills.
Become a nature investigator - Take a see-through container to scoop river / pond water into and see what you find in there! Why not take some litmus paper and test the water’s acidity? There are so many ways to introduce early Science / Biology knowledge at a young age, and help children foster a penchant for discovery. It's also a good time to introduce Leave No Trace principles from a very young age - teach your children always to leave a place as they found it, and minimise their disruption of nature and ecosystems whilst outdoors.
Create an insect hotel – Not that they need it, because let’s face it insects have got plenty of places to call home in the forest – but your children might enjoy using leaves, sticks, bark and broken branches to create spaces for them to thrive. It’s a great opportunity to talk to your kids about the different types of creatures in our environment, and their importance to our ecosystem.
Birdspotting / Wildlife log – keep a note of the various animals and birds you see around your campsite and out on the trail. What are they doing? Nesting? Hunting? What time of year is it and what do the Seasons mean for animals? All of these are great learning points for a little one learning about the Outdoors and all those who inhabit it.
Storytelling - Let Nature inspire your imagination and build out a story together with your little ones, using the natural environment to spark creativity. Found a feather? Perhaps it's from a magic crow... a clue to help you find some treasures...
Sing - An often overlooked activity on camping trips, but the age old tradition of singing by the campfire has lasted the test of time for a reason. Get over your embarrassment and engage with your kids by teaching music and rhythm. Much like reconnecting with nature, there really is something special about the sense of community that comes from sharing song.

Firstly, our team would like to thank those of you who have come along with us on our journey. Some of you have been with us since the very start when we brought the concept of Tree Tents to the market; and some of you are new to our community, having just joined us in the past few weeks or months. Each of you are now intrinsically involved in the Tentsile brand, our community and our continued success. Thank you for taking the chance of going off-piste and breaking the mould with your camping shelter choices. We hope you are all out there having a lot of fun. That is why we do what we do!
Tentsile has been lucky to find a unique niche in the outdoor market, allowing people to camp in places that are not possible with conventional camping equipment. We have found a customer base that has nature, adventure and fun at its heart, and we are proud to serve you. With your help, we have managed to build up a loyal following, a robust range of products, and solid credibility and reputation within the camping sector. Our name reverberates soundly around outdoor exhibition halls, retailers, and on social media.
Online, our presence is on-par with some of the best known and closest related outdoor brands, and this is something we are immensely proud of. We try to provide the kind of service you would expect from a company with global reach and hold ourselves to the highest standards of quality manufacturing and customer service. Behind the scenes, however, we are still just a small team working double hard to achieve these standards.
With only 7 members of our team, it is sometimes a real challenge to keep up with the demands set upon us and the expectations we have set for ourselves.
Our dream is big, our team is small; and we work hard to do our best for you all. Sometimes it can be overlooked that we do not have the resources of Amazon, the number of on-hand staff of REI, or the marketing budget of Patagonia. We rely on the good word-of-mouth praise from our customers to spread news of our brand, and the photogenic nature of our products to get traction on social media. Every good review counts and keeps us going.
We recently had a raffle for our 10th birthday, and it was well attended, with great prizes for the 10 winners and 20 runners up. Unfortunately, some thought it funny to post 1 Star reviews because they didn’t win. We understand that it is easy to overlook the power of a throw-away joke comment, but to us this matters, and they hurt. Small companies like us, battle against the big multi-nationals with the big bucks every day, whether to fight for our advertising space, get our stock on the right freight liners, or fight those that try and encroach on (and violate) our Intellectual Property. There are many behind-the-scenes factors going on, and we feel it important that you are aware of the broader picture.
Our team will always do its best for our customers and strive to keep you happy, safe and continuing your adventures in the trees. We will always treat you with respect, good humour, and courtesy, making sure that we give each of you the service you deserve and expect from Tentsile. All we ask is that you be aware that we are a small team, always doing our best. We look forward to bringing the joys of Tree Tents to you all for many years to come; the alternative would be a mighty sad day for everyone.
]]>Broadly referring to travel in ones own State or Country, and sometimes even staying as close to home as your own backyard, this new trend in simpler adventures has seen a surge in demand for Outdoors Gear and Apparel. So too has the appetite for new Outdoors pursuits grown, as people look for activities that are both fun and cost efficient.
Now, obviously we are biased. But a Tree Tent or Giant Hammock is worth considering if you’re looking to invest in a new camping shelter that will last for years to come. Not only will you have a portable suspended shelter to keep you up away from damp, muddy, bumpy ground conditions and wildlife, in the long run you stand to save a fortune on accommodation!
The average cost a week’s stay in a hotel for two in the USA is around $1800. Of course on top of that, there are plenty of other expenses - food, drink, gas and excursions all add to that total, but that will be true whatever kind of holiday you plan to go on. Compare that to picking up one of our Stingray Lite 3 person Tree Tents ($599) - which after the initial outlay costs as little as $25 per night to claim your pitch at a campsite.
There are a growing number of locations that accept Tentsile tents, which we’ll come on to shortly. Before that though, there is one other option to consider. For those of us who need a little more convincing of the joys of sleeping in the trees before making that kind of purchase (my budget conscious partner, for example) there’s the option to try before you buy at a site that offers Tree Tents to rent out for a short stay. Whether it’s a wilderness retreat in the nearby National Forests, a break just outside of the city limits, or an exclusive glamping experience with fairy lights, snuggly throws and all - we have a bunch of locations that now offer that service.
To check out where you can camp in a Tentsile - either your own, or one that is set up ready for an overnight glamping experience - check out the following resources and start planning your Summer adventures today (it’s never to early!)
We’ve recently put together a map which is a great place to start your search. Find a healthy mix of Tentsile friendly locations to explore.
*Note: This is not an exhaustive list - more will be added soon! We update details regularly but always recommend you contact the site directly ahead of travel to ensure listings are up to date and for booking enquiries.
USA:
Hipcamp.com - A fantastic resource to help you find campsites near you - book direct or use as a starting point for research.
Airbnb.com - As above
Recreation.org - Everything you’ll ever need to plan a trip in the USA - including helpful resources and guidance on best practice when travelling through American wild spaces.
Europe:
We’ve partnered up with Campanyon here in Europe, and using their campsite search you can filter by locations that invite people to bring their own Tree Tents.
However you plan to holiday this season, you can bet one of our Tree Tents or Hammocks will add to the experience. Whether it’s as your temporary abode for adventures the kids will remember forever, or an easy to pack and pitch multi-person hammock to rest your weary legs for a spell - your comfort in the outdoors is guaranteed to go up a notch.
]]>It’s that wonderful time of year when the days are getting longer, and the weekends are too! With a bunch of long weekends this month we thought you might be looking for some inspiration on how to make the most of your extra days in the sun (Tentsile style, obviously.)
There really is nothing better than relaxing under the trees. Maybe it’s something to do with the breeze in the branches, and the gentle whoosh of the leaves…. the sway of the hammock… (Can you tell we wrote this blog from the woods?). We are giving Forest bathing an upgrade with our multi person hammocks - designed for communal hangouts from sunny beach, to shady glade. Our bestseller, the Trillium 3.0 is bigger than it looks - able to comfortably accommodate 3 adults stretched out in full chill mode. Add a Tentsile drinks holder to the hatch to keep your beverage steady, and you are set. It doesn’t always need to be an overnight affair, just a few hours of escape from the city grind is sometimes all it takes!
One wonderful way to spend time with our families over the long weekend, is an overnight camping adventure with the little ones. A family favourite for a reason, the Stingray 3 person Tree Tent is perfect for this job. Sturdy, spacious, and comfy - it’s a family tent that will last for years. Add a Trillium hammock and a rope ladder below for an extra spot for kids to play (that’ll keep them occupied for a bit!) while the grown ups relax and enjoy the view of the canopy above.
As always, pick a location that meets your needs and do your research to make sure it has all the amenities you need for your family to stay overnight. Check out Recreation.gov and Hipcamp.com for US campsite contact info, and Campanyon in Europe
You can also check out our new Map of Tentsile friendly locations (not an exhaustive list, we’re working on it!) to see if there’s anywhere near you welcoming guests with a Tree Tent.
After a brisk morning hike up to your favourite viewpoint, take a minute (or an hour) to unwind and soak up the awesome scenery. Our two person T-Mini double hammock is lightweight enough to pack out for a day hike and will elevate your rest spot - so you can take the weight off and float above it all for a bit of reflection time in the wilderness.
Take the pups, the partner, or just your own company for a spot of mind clearing exercise in the fresh air.

Why is my tent or rainfly sticky?
If you are experiencing issues with a sticky tent or rainfly or have noticed that your tent is no longer able to repel water, you might be experiencing PU-Coating Delamination.
What is PU Coating?
PU-Coating is a thin layer of polyurethane which is applied to the tent material during production stage. The coating gives the material water-proof properties, and usually applied to the underside of the fabric. PU-Coatings have some excellent benefits and are widely used in the camping industry to waterproof anything from your tent to your jacket. The PU coating on a tent will typically last around 2 years, depending on usage and correct storage, after this you can simply apply new layer of PU spray, offered by a leading outdoor gear company such as NikWax. If the tent has been stored for a long time or incorrectly the life of the tent can drastically reduce as a result of PU-delamination.
Care and Maintenance – Storing your tent
Airing your Tent:
Prior to storage, it is important to air your tent out for at least two hours to ensure 100% of the moisture has dissipated and the tent is completely dry. We recommend that the tent is free from debris, food and dirt. Even a small piece of organic matter can lead to mould or material degradation during storage, especially over long periods of time. If your tent is dirty, it can be cleaned using warm water, a sponge and a mild washing detergent. It is not recommended to use a washing machine or dry cleaning to clean your tent. Keeping your tent clean and dry will ensure it is protected for years to come.
What is Off-Gassing
All Polyester materials omit small amounts of gas and need access to good ventilation to stay in optimum condition. If the tent is not able to off-gas, for example if it has been stored to tightly, it will create a vacuum which will lead to PU-degradation. The life expectancy of your tent is not just calculated on its usage, how the tent is stored can be equally important. To ensure an optimum life span for your tent, it is recommended to store your tent loosely and not in its original bag. This will allow the material off-gas.. Ideally tents should be hung out loose and never rolled up tight for long periods of time.
Cool and Dry Environment:
When choosing a location to store your tent it is important to find a suitable location which is neither too hot or cold and has access to good ventilation. Attics, garages and basement are not recommended, unless they are well ventilated and have good insulation.
Condensation Removers:
A simple way to promote a suitable environment to store your tent is by adding some condensation removers such as absorbent sachets. This type of product can be purchased quite easily and will absorb any surrounding moisture in your storage area. All our tents include one absorbent sachet to ensure that the tent stays nice and dry during transportation and storage.
Repair or Up-Cycle:
If you are suffering from PU-delamination there are several things to consider before throwing it in the bin or buying a replacement. On many occasions it is possible to rejuvenate your tent or rainfly by replacing the layer of PU-Coating and reviving the water resistance of the tent. The tent will first need to be hand washed to ensure the old layer of PU-Coating has been cleaned off, adding some talcum powder to absorb the residue can also help. Once the tent or rainfly is completely PU-Coating free and 100% dry you can now apply a new layer of PU-coating spray supplied by companies such as Nikwax. If after washing you still find that the material has a stickiness to it, it might be time to send your old rainfly for Up-Cycle and purchase a new one.
]]>And this Arbor Day, we have an exciting announcement to share with you; from May 2023 we are extending our planting efforts with a brand new partnership with veritree!
We have partnered up with veritree - a data driven, restorative platform who take the mystery out of tree planting - so that we can better verify and monitor the impact of our environmental efforts. After all, it’s all good planting hundreds of thousands of trees - but how do we ensure their survival once they’re in the soil? And how do we, and our customers, know exactly where they’re planted, how large an area we have reforested together, and what measurable collective impact we have had in revitalising ecosystems, strengthening communities, and building measurable climate solutions?
Through this partnership, we will bring transparency to the whole process – to ensure the right trees are planted in the right place and that the trees, once planted, are staying in the ground as intended – benefitting communities and restoring deforested regions for many, many, decades to come.
veritree runs its global restoration network via on-the-ground monitoring, using mobile devices in the hands of local community members to measure impact. Whenever a tree is planted, the whole process is recorded, with each individual shrub registered and issues with it’s own QR code as it goes into the ground. Using this blockchain technology and in-field data, veritree provide us (and you!) with regular updates about our planting sites – from the carbon sequestered, to the species planted, the hours of work provided to local communities, and the impact all of these efforts have on local environment and ecosystems. You can follow our progress and the impact we're having, here.
Tentsile will be planting Mangrove trees with a project called Earth Lungs in Kenya. Coastal Kenya is one of the least developed regions of the country. Communities here are dependent on the Mangrove ecosystems for employment, livelihood, and nutrition. In recent decades, coastal areas in Southern Kenya have been urbanized at unprecedented rates, and vast areas of Mangrove forest have been converted into other land use. Coupled with lack of effective governance, Mangroves were overexploited and overharvested, and the destruction of these areas also contributed to the loss of critical habitats for many organisms such as the fish that local fishermen depend on for food and income.
With each Tree Tent and Hammock you purchase you will be planting 20 verified Mangrove trees, and together we will be restoring these depleted forests. An integral goal of this project is to empower the coastal community in Kenya to break the poverty cycle. In restoring the Mangrove estuary, which is rich in biodiversity, EarthLungs is actively regenerating the environment and fishing grounds for local people. This helps to create additional income streams, including sustainable harvests from the Mangrove forests. The restored forests will also help to stabilize coastlines, which will act as a vital line of defence to protect the land and the communities during tropical storms and wildfires, both of which are becoming more commonplace due to the acceleration of climate change. All of this of course, is in addition to the carbon that will be sequestered back into the plants themselves.
Nature is our single greatest ally when it comes to fighting climate change. Restoring nature through tree planting, benefits the planet, ecosystems, and local communities. Trees act as carbon sinks, i.e. they absorb and store carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, but these carbon sinks are only effective if the trees remain growing and on the ground for a long time. In addition, trees also help prevent soil erosion, provide habitat for animals, enhance biodiversity, and provide fuel and income for people and communities.
There are approximately 3 trillion trees on Earth, which sounds a lot, but is only half as many as there were 12,000 years ago. It’s estimated that people cut down 15 billion trees each year, so preserving our existing forests is important. We also need to continue to restore degraded land and ecosystems through planting the right trees in the right place, and in the right way, to make sure the trees go on to thrive.
The amount of carbon dioxide sequestered per tree varies by several different factors, such as type of tree, environmental influences, the tree’s maturity, lifespan, and more! For instance, it is estimated that an Acadian tree sequesters 1.1 tons of CO2 during the average Acadian tree’s lifespan, a Douglas Fir sequesters 1.08 Tons of CO2 in its lifetime, and a Mangrove tree sequesters 0.31 Tons of CO2 in its lifetime. That said, these numbers are only estimates and are subject to change as research and monitoring evolves.
As ever, we have our customers to thank for the progress we’ve made so far in our tree planting work – and we hope that you will keep supporting Tentsile so we can continue to improve our World, one tree at a time.
]]>This year, from Saturday April 16th to April 24th, there will be events both in person and virtually that people can attend, as well as a chance to visit a National Park for free on the first day!
]]>These public lands are cherished as some of the most beautiful places in the World, and no matter what State you're in, you're never far from a National Park. Will you Hike, Bike, Climb, Raft, SUP (or indeed, camp in a Tree Tent!) throughout the National Parks this year?
What is National Parks week, and where did it all begin?
In 1916, the Organic Act created the National Park Service in order "to conserve the scenery and the natural and historical objects and wildlife therein...". Fast forward to 1991 - the very first National Parks Week was designated to coincide with their 75th Anniversary. Since then, every April Americans are invited to explore these unspoilt wild spaces, discover their history and culture, and learn first hand about Nature itself.
On the first day of National Park week, Saturday, April 22, all national park entrance fees will be waived for visitors, which means there really is no barrier to adventuring among some of the most iconic natural landmarks on the planet.
This year the theme is 'Your Park Story' - with the National Parks Service & National Parks Foundation inviting both their staff and the public to share their personal experiences of these beautiful locations. You can follow the Campaign using #YourParkStory, or share your own stories using #MyParkStory on social media.

Happy Earth Day! Every year since 1970, on April 22, global citizens join forces to celebrate our wonderful Green Planet and highlight the importance of environmental sustainability. Today, Earth Day is widely recognised as the largest secular observance in the world, marked by more than a billion people.
The theme of Earth Day 2023 is 'Invest in our Planet', and asks each of us - brands and consumers alike - to come together and fight for a green revolution.
"Our world needs transformation. It’s time for the people of the world to hold governments and the private sector accountable for their role in our environmental crisis while also calling for bold, creative, and innovative solutions." Earthday.org
That's where we come in. As individuals, we have the power to make our voices heard through our purchasing choices, by being ever more discerning about what we buy and who we shop with. As businesses, we can work to reduce our environmental impact by assessing our supply chains, the materials we use, and the way we ship our products.
For more inspiration you can check out this great resource from EarthDay.org - there are so many small actions we can take, that add up to a huge collective impact.
How Tentsile Invests in Our Planet
Tree Planting
The very foundation of our brand is built upon Tree Planting. From the outset, we have pledged to protect global forests from deforestation with every Tree Tent we sold. Over the past decade we have worked with a number of tree planting partners to rejuvenate and replenish deforested areas, whilst assisting communities to move away from destructive practices such as logging and slash and burn, by offering viable alternative sources of income and food security. For every Tree Tent and Hammock that you purchase, we plant 20 trees - and have proudly planted over 966,000 so far.
Want to plant a Tree yourself? Check out this guide that gives you all the pointers you need!
1% For The Planet
Each year we donate 1% of our Revenue to 1% For the Planet, all of which goes towards supporting conservation projects around the world. We are very proud partners of this climate positive initiative, which brings brands together - large or small - to create a coalition of environmentally minded folk who together make big things happen.
European Outdoor Conservation Association
There are currently over 150 members of this environmental association, of which we are proudly one. Membership is open to any company operating in the Outdoors sector, whether they are a manufacturer, supplier, service provider or retailer. One hundred per cent of membership fees go directly into the projects that are nominated by and voted for by the members themselves.
This Earth Day why not treat yourself to some new gear at a fraction of the price, by shopping with the EOCA backed project Outdoor Gear For Good (hint: you might find some brand new Tentsile gear on there too...!).

We choose to ship our gear by sea freight, as it is 100x less polluting than shipping by Air. It may be slower, and means that we sometimes run out of stock, but we would rather lose out on a sale here and there than pollute our planet!
Reclaiming Ocean Plastic
Last year we launched two new products to the range - made from reclaimed Ocean plastics! The Ocean UNA and Ocean Solo Hammock are available on store now. Now you can hike and bikepack to your hearts content, in the knowledge that your Tree Tent purchase has actively removed plastic pollution from our Oceans.
Say No to Fast Fashion
"Behind every piece of clothing in a store, there is an industry stripping the Earth of its limited resources and exploiting the labor force that works in its garment factories. Tremendous waste characterizes this industry as it depletes healthy soil, contaminates fresh water sources, pollutes the air we breathe, defiles our oceans, destroys forests and damages eco-systems and the health of their biodiversity." - EarthDay.org
That's why we've partnered up with TeeMill to offer a range of sustainably made clothing. We use renewable energy, recycled materials, GOTS certified organic cotton and plastic-free packaging in the production of any of our Apparel range.
As you can see - we take sustainability seriously, and we know our customers do too. Let's keep practising what we preach, walking the walk, and putting pressure on the powers that be to strive for planet positive solutions. We can do it, together.

]]>We have some 60-year-old Manitoba Maples in our back yard – When faced with the question – tree house – or tree “tent” – our granddaughter had no hesitation enthusiastically choosing the Tentsile Stingray over a wooden treehouse, for a backyard retreat when visiting Grampa & Nana.

This is also a perfect setting to camp out with a tree tent 🙂 We pitched our Connect along the side with the calm waters as the front view.
We’ve camped in a few more spots in the country and it would be great to know a few new ones which you’ve been into.
Have a great day everyone!

My wife and I had an amazing time camping on the west shores of Maui last week.
Many people stopped to ask us about our Tentsile Connect tree tent and we were more than happy to give them a tour.
We’re planning a 6-month tour of the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii for 2018. You can bet our Tentsile will be along for the ride.
]]>We brought our Tentsile, and spent our time wandering around the island looking for places to set up our tree tent! We stumbled upon Mackenzie State Park, in Puna, Hawaii. It is known to be a haunted, 13-acre remote park on the edge of Hawaii and the Pacific Ocean. We first arrived to watch the sunset over the ocean and returned the next morning to catch the sunrise.
To have the chance to relax among the trees enjoying the beautiful view felt like we were one with Nature, moments in time that will not soon be forgotten. I thank you, Tentsile, for letting us have experiences like this.
]]>Most people in Norway have a summer house, called a hytte. We do not have, nor want a hytte. We have a Tentsile which we hang up in our garden during summer months. It gets lots of use and we did not regret buying it as one of the very first. We look forwards to many more years of joy hanging out in our summerhouse.

There are tents and hammocks of so many different sizes, shapes, weights, pack-size, hydrostatic head (waterproofness!) – you name the category, it’s out there - you can end up spending more hours trawling the internet for comparison sites and reviews than you do about planning your route and getting excited about being in the Great Outdoors. At which point, it sometimes feels easier to throw in your backpacking towel before you’ve even started.
But don’t give up just yet. This blog will help guide you through. Well, kind of. Or, at least, if nothing else, hopefully it will provide you with a bit of light relief as you make your own pre-backing, arduous journey through the world of comparison sites and a foray into what kit you need for the next trip. The aim of this blog is not to give a brand comparison. Clearly Tentsile is the best (…did I just say that?!)! No, the aim of this blog is to highlight the pros and cons of tent vs hammocks for backpacking. And, as mentioned earlier, if nothing else, if all we can offer you is a pit stop to have a rest on the road, to sit down for a momentary pause, to have a coffee and a chance to pick yourself back up for the rest of your trek through the internet’s Great Outdoor Gear Reviews sites, then there’s merit in that too!
A good place to start when looking at tents vs hammocks is whether you like ‘up’ or ‘down’? Hammocks go up; tents go down. Simple. Unless it’s a Tentsile, of course – which does both (but we can come on to this later!). Another question to ask yourself is do you like wobbly or do you like study? Hammocks wobble (swing side to side); tents are sturdy (rooted on the ground). Again, unless it’s a Tentsile (but we’re not trying to steal the show here…promise!).
These two questions start the journey with excitement. Then the conundrums come.
Hammocks are comfortable. No doubt about it! Being off the ground they can curve around your body. And the gentle swing from side to side? – well, who can deny it’s like rocking a baby to sleep (unless you suffer from seasickness! Then it’s not great!). Another fabulous benefit of the hammock is that you can see the world from your bed. Even hammocks with roofs most often have some space for you to look out. Also, hammocks are easy to put up. Hammocks are often cheaper, and easier to pack down. They can fit in your bag easier, making travel easier. They can be cooler on those balmy nights, as you have al fresco airflow. Hammocks allow you to camp on a range of terrains – flat ground is a little pedestrian for a Hammocker! - restrictive, limiting, unambitious. Hammocks allow you to adventure out and reach new heights. Literally! Indeed, there are lots of benefits of hammocks.
And yet what if there are no trees. Or other suitable posts (I was once spent four nights hammocked between posts on a boat going down the Rio Napo in Ecuador). That’s the end of the hammock dream. You do need trees or posts. That’s crucial. Also, hammocking is not allowed everywhere, so it might not be as carefree and adventurously spontaneous as your imagination might think. And there are other downsides too. You are more exposed in a hammock, and on those cold nights you might be colder as your body heat floats off into the night sky, both above you and below (although a Tentsile sleeping SkyPad can help with that particular problem! Again, not trying to steal the show!).
And so, maybe a tent is worth a revisit. The good old trusted on-the-ground tent. Never too traditional to be cast aside. Tents works. And as they say, if it ain’t broke… They provide cover, keep your heat in, you can sleep together with a fellow backpacker, there’s better protection against rain, you can store your gear inside, you can spread out a little. Yes, there’s lots about the ground tent that is worth considering. A tent brings you back down to earth, keeps you grounded. You know where you stand with a tent. No side to side, no thinking about trees or posts, how and where. Just find some ground and hit the sack!
But then there are poles to consider; they can break. Condensation is worse in a tent. Visibility is more restricted; you can rarely see the beauty of the Great Outdoors from inside a tent. Tents can get too hot. Tents trap insects (inside!). Tents are harder to pack down and travel with. What if the ground isn’t flat? And of course, you are closer to the creepy crawlies on the ground. Yes, there are issues with tents.
Really, you want something that fits in between a tent and a hammock. Something that does both. A tent that feels like a tent, but is off the ground. Hard not to say it, but that is exactly what a Tentsile is. But we’re not here to brag – and I will stick to my word that we’re not here to steal the show. So, putting aside the fact that a Tentsile clearly is the best option for backpacking (check out the UNA or the Flite, for example, with their ground conversation kits…shhh), there are lots of things to consider when picking between a tent and a hammock when planning a backpacking trip: think about your preferences, your experience, your skill, the type of trail you’re going on; all these things will affect your decision, and all these things will impact how much you enjoy your trip.
From our side – the Tentsile side – we just want you out and about, enjoying the Great Outdoors as best you can, for as long as you can, rather than being stuck behind a screen for longer than you need to. And on that note, my suggestion is you go and consider your options whilst taking a walk. Mull it over. Think it through. Ruminate a little. And whilst you do, think about how cool it would be to sleep in a tent that’s of the ground (…shh!).

But still, you want to satisfy that itch for being in the great outdoors – the fresh air, the campfire, the quality family time together. Well, you still can. Indeed, it doesn’t take much to pitch up at home. Nice, easy, and all within reach of all your needs and comforts, including the kitchen (not to mention a decent loo!). The benefits to children of spending time outdoors are huge - and education in nature can start at home. These backyard camping ideas will help you bring the experience of camping right to your backyard!
Easy and familiar, yet exciting and adventurous, there is simply few things more super cosy than setting up in your own backyard! Sometimes just using your own garden in a way you don’t normally use it can be all it takes to bring the magic back into your week. Backyards are not just about hanging up the laundry or mowing the lawn. They are also places to relax and enjoy. Discover the many ways you can use your backyard by pitching up your tent, hassle free, and enjoying a new home away from home.
Your kids can help you prepare the new magical Neverland in which you’ll spend the night. They can help you grab the blankets, pitch the tent, gather the firewood, and bring the marshmallows. Not only that; they can design the menu for the food – will it be burgers on the BBQ, sausages on a stick, or melted cheese in baguette? Yum! And after the meal, come on, kids - grab the torches and let’s snuggle in for an adventure story!
Do we still have enough rucksacks? (Where do we keep them, again?). Got enough changes of coats? (Why is little Jimmy’s zip broken?). Did you ever get a new bottle of gas for the stove? (I thought you were doing it?). Sometimes the amount of prep to leave your house is enough to stop you from going. The endless checklists, the covering-all-eventualities, the remembering about what needs replenishing, can all be too much!
So much easier to just stay at home; and camping in the backyard can give you all the enjoyment and benefits of overnighting in the fresh air, but with all the home comforts in easy reach. No checking. Just fun, comfort and straight into the action of being together. Warm. Cosy. Instant.
It is also cheap and quick! There’s no fuel costs or pitch fees. The garden sits there all year round, and is free from thinking about what to pack, how many socks you’ll need, and do you have enough blankets – because you can nip in and get what you want, and cook what you like.
Learn about nature, learn about pitching a tent, learn how to make a fire, build the strength and resilience to be outside (and in the dark!), find ingenious ways to solve problems. Something not working? – maybe that piece of twine will in handy. Create, invent, problem solve.
What can you get up to in your back yard? Where does one start – so much to choose from. Here are a few ideas to get your inspired!
Hide things in the garden, draw a map and get the kids to go and find them (yum, perhaps a chocolate egg or pack of marshmallows as a prize!). Or you could stargaze: how many bright dots do you think there are? What’s that red one? And what’s Orion’s belt anyway?
Go around the garden, picking up pretty leaves and interesting twigs, pebbles and flowers, and stick them together! With a bit of luck, you could frame it and mount it pride of place on your kitchen wall.
Let’s face it, nothing more fun than gathering different sizes of twigs and wood, building a little pyramid with some paper and card at the base, and lighting it – the colours, the smell, the fun! (And don’t forget the snacks!). Indeed, there’s lots to do in the backyard.
Tentsile has a range of great products to suit your needs. Of course, if you have no trees, you can use the Luna ground tent – great for a cosy snuggle on the ground. Or you can get a Tentsile tree tent and use a Tentsile Ground Conversation Kit. Cheap, easy, simple and fun!
But if you do have some trees (or two trees and good solid something else!), let the games begin. Choose a Stingray – perfect for a family with small children. Tension it up, and away you go, each with their own in/out door, and a floor hatch for extra adventure! Or maybe you choose two Connects – one for the kids, one for the parents! It’s always nice to hang out in the day, yet equally as exciting to go into your separate ‘cabins’ for the night! “See you in the morning, kids!”
Alternatively you just use the Trillium hammocks range. More for a day’s hangout, but great fun to rest and play, read stories, play the guitar, all sorts. You can even play badminton across the straps!
Or perhaps you use both. There is nothing like setting your Trillium up, then a little higher putting your Stingray to make Tentsile Stack. A real tree house in the trees, with a cosy platform for shoes and clothes underneath. Mix and match. The whole range is modular, so you can go as wild as you like. Make your dream treehouse in your back yard.
And the beauty is, when it’s all over, you can simply pack up your treehouse and put it away for the next back yard adventure! Tentsile and backyard camping; a perfect way to elevate your backyard experience.
