On May 27, 2025, the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) in London hosted a captivating evening titled The Great Tree Story LIVE, presented by renowned explorer and author Levison Wood in collaboration with Journeys With Purpose (JWP). This unique event brought together a distinguished panel of experts to delve into the profound impact of forests on our planet's history, culture, and future.
A Night of Exploration and Insight
Arriving at the Royal Geographical Society, I was struck immediately by the relevance of the venue itself – before the event even began. How many of the World’s leading explorers have walked these corridors over past centuries, and how many of modern societies great scientific discoveries were made possible only by their research activities and intrepid adventures? It was a privilege to join fellow attendees for the sell-out book launch in such a prestigious centre of learning, made all the more meaningful to us as a brand by the focus on Trees and Forests - and the integral role they play in all of our lives.
The event featured an engaging panel discussion with Levison Wood and his guests, including:
- Bruce Parry – Filmmaker and Indigenous rights advocate
- Lord Zac Goldsmith – Environmental leader and former UK Minister
- Lucy Shepherd – Explorer and filmmaker
- Dr Rosa Vasquez Espinosa – Nature Scientist and chemical biologist
Together, they explored the multifaceted roles that forests play in our world, from their ecological significance to their cultural and spiritual importance. The evening also highlighted the urgent need for further conservation efforts to protect these vital ecosystems – encouraging a shift collective belief from one where Trees are merely a source of commercial value, to one that preserves this precious natural resource for the sake of humanity itself.
Celebrating The Great Tree Story
The event coincided with the release of Levison Wood's latest book, The Great Tree Story: How Forests Have Shaped Our World. In this work, Wood examines the intricate relationships between humans and forests, tracing their influence from ancient civilizations to modern environmental challenges. The book emphasizes the wisdom of indigenous communities in forest stewardship and the critical importance of collective action in preserving these ecosystems.
A Call to Action
The Great Tree Story LIVE served as both an informative and inspiring evening, urging attendees to reflect on their relationship with the natural world and consider ways to contribute to the preservation of our planet's forests. Throughout the lively debate, panellists underscored the importance of understanding and protecting the environments that sustain us all.
