Environmental Stewardship

As Tentsile was founded on principles of ecological conversation, we feel we have an important part to play in combating climate change. Over the past 5 years, we’ve made change within our business that reduce our own environmental footprint in the following ways:

Waste and Recycling

We are committed to reducing the amount of waste we divert to landfill and improving our recycling rates. That is why we have an upcycling programme for products that are end-of-life, or still have some years of good service left in them. Please contact us for further details on this.

We have worked hard to remove all single use plastic components, wrapping or packaging from our product range and full supply chain.

Tentsile Staff are asked to proactively reduce waste and increase recycling at home. We are careful to separate waste into recyclables and non-recyclable, and consider purchasing products and food that have minimal plastic packaging both for us as individuals, and for company activities and events. 

Printing

We have moved to a fully digital working environment, and do not use paper  or printing in our daily activities. Soon, we will be moving to digital manuals for our products and will be encouraging any 3rd party suppliers to follow suit.

Our cardboard boxes are made from recycled card, printed with non-toxic black ink only. No plastic wrap or tape is used in the packaging of Tentsile products, as part of our Leave No Trace commitment.

Business mileage

Sometimes, we do need to travel for our work. We encourage staff to opt for public transport as their first option, but if that is not viable, we promote car sharing and only allow flights by exception.

Carbon Offsetting

Whenever we do need to employ air travel, we calculate the carbon footprint for the journey and plant a suitable number of trees to ensure that these journeys are off-set as carbon neutral.

We recognise offsetting is not the ‘quick fix’ which is why we are also committed to reducing our carbon emissions further.

Carbon Reduction

We know that the buildings we occupy generate Co2 emissions which is why in 2018, we decided to voluntarily close all of our offices and start a work from home initiative. Tentsile no longer has offices, shops or showrooms of its own.

Tree Planting

We plant 20 trees for each Tree Tent or Hammock bought on our website, without award winning tree-planting partners, Veritree, Eden Projects and WeForest. The sampling trees have a 85% survival rate and are made up of mixed indigenous species, native to the area. Local residence make up the tree planting workforce, giving them an alternative and sustainable income to the charcoal and deforestation economies that have become pervasive in many of these areas.

Shipping

Our products are made in our own purpose-built factory and are shipped to our fulfilment centres across the world via sea freight, as it is 100x less polluting than air freight.
