These rubber stoppers prevent the ingress of any water under the rain cover in the event of days and days of continuous rain.
There are times when the rain just won't stop. This can mean that rainwater soaks the straps to such a point that the water can be channelled under the rain fly and around the corner D-rings.
WaterGates guard against this phenomenon by shedding the excess water before it can get to the tent.
