Earth Month and the Power of Restoration

As we near the end of Earth Month—conversations around protecting our planet are more important than ever. From the accelerating climate crisis to the urgent need for nature restoration, the time to act is now. At 1.5 degree Celsius of global warming, we are already experiencing devastating effects—record-breaking heat waves, historic wildfires, prolonged droughts, and intensifying storms. Communities worldwide are facing the consequences of a changing climate. From disrupted food systems to infrastructure damage and supply chain instability, climate change isn’t a distant threat—it’s happening now. Together, we need to take urgent action. The good news? Restoring nature is one of the most effective climate solutions.

Beyond absorbing carbon, nature provides biodiversity, clean air and water, fertile soils, and resilience against extreme weather. If we want a livable future, we must restore the balance between climate and nature along with supporting the health, culture and equality of our communities. Healthy ecosystems sequester greenhouse gases, buffer against extreme weather, and provide habitat for wildlife—all while supporting local communities. At Tentsile, we believe businesses have a responsibility to do more than just minimize harm – we must be part of the solution. That’s why we partner with Veritree, and are taking real, verifiable restorative action. Through this partnership we are planting real, verified trees that restore ecosystems, support biodiversity, and empower local communities. A great thing about Veritree is our impact is tracked and transparent. With their platform, we can follow the progress of our trees, measure their benefits, and see how they contribute to thriving forests. See our impact in action – check out our Impact Hub to explore the projects we’re supporting and the impact we’ve made to date, or read more about our work with Veritree.

Arbor Day and the Importance of Forest Protection

While Earth Day is a global call to climate action, Arbor Day is a moment to focus on trees—the silent heroes of our ecosystems. For a decade now, we’ve been proud to plant 20 trees for every Tentsile tent or hammock sold, and thanks to our community, we’ve now planted over 1 million trees. That’s 1 million steps toward a more biodiverse, resilient, and thriving planet. But restoration is only part of the solution. Moving forward, we’re expanding our mission beyond planting trees—to protecting the forests we still have.

Old-growth forests are irreplaceable. They sequester way more carbon than new-growth forests, some of which gets re-released into the atmosphere when chopped down. Studies show that allowing existing natural forests to reach their full ecological potential – a process termed 'proforestation” – is a far more effective, immediate, and lower cost way of removing and storing greenhouse gases in the long term than planting trees. They’re also biodiversity hotspots. While new forests can take decades to establish wildlife habitat, old-growth forests already provide homes for endangered species, rare plants, fungi, and insects that depend on stable, undisturbed conditions. Globally, old-growth forests store more than 40% of terrestrial carbon and support two-thirds of all land-based species.

Once lost, they can't simply be replanted. It can take hundreds of years for a forest to regain the complexity, carbon storage, and species richness of old-growth. That’s why halting deforestation and preserving these irreplaceable ecosystems must be a global priority. At Tentsile, we’re committing to being part of that shift. While continuing to increase the amount of trees with planting-efforts is important, we’re also looking ahead—developing new partnerships and initiatives to protect existing forests, and advocate  or policies that keep nature standing strong.

Tree by tree, forest by forest, we can build a future that’s not just sustainable—but regenerative. One that honours the ecosystems that already do so much for us, and ensures they continue to thrive for generations to come. This Earth Month, we invite you to be part of something bigger. By making simple choices - supporting restoration, reducing waste, and advocating for nature, we can drive real change.
